Most of the layoffs at the company's plant in IJmuiden, near Amsterdam, will involve management and support positions.
The company noted that the reorganization will be carried out by eliminating repetitive tasks and increasing automation. "Demand conditions in Europe have become extremely challenging due to geopolitical developments, trade and supply chain disruptions and rising energy costs. This is why we have to take this step," Tata Steel officials stated.
Harsh Criticism from the Union: "Nothing but Chaos"
Following the announcement of the news, a harsh statement came from FNV, the largest umbrella union federation in the Netherlands. The union criticized the process, stating that they “do not understand” Tata's restructuring plans.
In a statement, FNV stated, "Even now we don't have detailed plans. It is not clear what the company is trying to do. The only thing that is being created right now is chaos."
Past Plans Not Implemented
In November 2023, Tata Steel announced that it would lay off about 800 of its 11,500 employees in the Netherlands. However, despite the announcement made at that time, it is known that very few layoffs were implemented. It is a matter of curiosity how the new announcement will be implemented in this context.
