Tata Steel and Dutch government in conversation to decarbonise IJmuiden plant

Tata Steel has announced that it is engaged in a comprehensive study and negotiation process with the Dutch government on decarbonising its IJmuiden operations.

Tata Steel and Dutch government in conversation to decarbonise IJmuiden plant

Responding to reports that the Dutch government is prepared to provide billions of EUR funding to decarbonise Tata Steel's IJmuiden facilities, the company said that in March the Dutch Parliament authorised the government to negotiate potential support for the decarbonisation of Tata Steel Nederland.

Tata Steel said it could take months to reach an agreement and that the final terms would need to be approved by Parliament and the Tata Steel board. The company stated that it is not possible to reach a definitive conclusion as of now and therefore is not in a position to comment further.

Conversion Plans at IJmuiden Plant...

Tata Steel plans to establish a gas-based Direct Reducing Iron (DRI) and Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) operation at its IJmuiden plant in the Netherlands. This conversion will be made possible by the availability of gas in the Netherlands, with the aim of switching to hydrogen in the future. IJmuiden already has a pellet plant supporting the DRI route. Last week, Tata Steel signed agreements with Danieli and Tenova for the basic engineering of the direct reduction plant and other facilities in IJmuiden.

Tata Steel's Dutch operations declined 3% year-on-year to 1.43 million tonnes in the March quarter. However, it was 10% higher than the previous quarter due to the completion of the No. 6 blast furnace re-line. Liquid steel production was also down 3% y-o-y to 1.48 million tonnes, but up 24% from the December quarter.

Tata Steel's environmentally friendly production and investment strategies are important steps towards achieving its sustainability goals. These developments in the Netherlands are considered as important steps towards a greener future in steel production.
