Taiwan's stainless steel exports decreased in September

Taiwanese stainless steel exports decreased in September, driven by falling demand in the European Union (EU), particularly in Italy.

Taiwan's stainless steel exports decreased in September

Taiwan’s total exports of stainless flat products dropped by 27% m-o-m to 64,600 tons, primarily due to reduced buying activity in Europe. Italy was the hardest hit, with shipments to the country plunging by 58% to 7,700 tons.

Cold-rolled coil (CRC) exports fell by 25% to 48,800 tons, with more than half of the decline attributed to Italy. Taiwanese suppliers cited several factors for this drop, including weaker demand in the EU’s automotive and home appliance markets, the economic slowdown in the region, higher freight costs in the summer, and the traditional vacation period in Europe, which dampened trade. Exports to Belgium and Switzerland also fell by 17%, while shipments to South Korea, Canada, and Mexico dropped by 42%, 47%, and 51%, respectively.

In contrast, Taiwan’s stainless steel exports increased to the U.S. and Türkiye, with shipments rising by 20% and 206%, respectively.

Hot-rolled coil (HRC) exports also suffered, falling by 34% to 15,800 tons in September, with Italy again experiencing the steepest decline, down by 61%. Shipments to the U.S. and South Korea saw smaller reductions of 3% and 15%, respectively.

On the import side, Taiwan's stainless flat product imports remained relatively stable at 95,800 tons. HRC imports from Indonesia rose by 13%, while imports from China dropped by 18%.
