Taiwan's scrap imports fall 9.34% in the first half of the year

In the first half of this year, Taiwan imported approximately 1.46 million tons of scrap metal, marking a decline of 9.34% compared to the same period last year. The United States emerged as the leading supplier, contributing around 624,000 tons and experiencing a growth in its share by 4.6%. Japan followed as the second-largest source, supplying about 357,000 tons, although this represented a significant decrease of 32.34%.

In June alone, Taiwan's scrap imports reached around 232,000 tons. The US maintained its leading position with a substantial 40.11% share, amounting to roughly 93,000 tons. Japan was the second-largest contributor for the month, providing 64,000 tons and holding a 27.53% share.

Changes in Taiwan's scrap imports reflect the impact of various economic and geopolitical factors on the market. The significant increase in imports from the US reveals strong trade relations. On the other hand, the 5.5% drop in Japanese exports in the first half of the year led to a decline in exports to Taiwan.
