The Deputy Coordinator of the Aegean Exporters' Associations and President of the Aegean Iron and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association, Yalçın Ertan, stated, "In 2025, we will undertake numerous activities, ranging from sustainability-focused projects to trade delegations, from Europe to the Middle East, creating a significant foundation for our firms to strengthen in the global market. We will have a strong representation at the Made in Steel Fair in Milan, Italy, from May 6-8, 2025. The world is making tremendous strides in renewable energy. It is our priority that our country benefits from this. Therefore, we will establish important collaborations at the Wind Europe Summit, which will bring together turbine technology and wind energy equipment manufacturers in Copenhagen, Denmark, from April 8-10, 2025."
President Ertan added, "Given the importance of renewable energy for our iron and non-ferrous metals sector, we will repeat our visit to Intersolar Europe, one of the world's leading solar energy and equipment fairs held in Munich, Germany, this year in 2025, providing support to participating companies and closely monitoring developments in the industry."
Green transformation project in the iron and steel sector
Ertan stated that the Green Transformation and International Marketing URGE Project in the Iron and Non-Ferrous Metals Sector, set to commence in 2025, aims to facilitate the transformation of the sector in alignment with carbon neutrality targets. He continued:
“In our project, which aligns with the EU Green Deal and clean production goals, we aim to enhance the management processes and efficiency of our companies to ensure their adaptability to new market dynamics. With the Green Academy Program we plan to launch in 2025, we aim to increase awareness in the sector by providing training on sustainability and green production for the personnel of our member companies.”
Preparation for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
Ertan also mentioned, “As part of the ‘Inter-Cluster Cooperation for Carbon Management’ project, which we are conducting in partnership with our Association and the Italian clean energy cluster COSVIG, and coordinated by ENSIA, we will undertake a study and inspection visit to Hamburg, Germany, from November 18-23, 2024. This visit aims to enhance the capacities of exporting firms regarding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and facilitate information and experience exchange with the EU. We aim to support the adaptation of the iron and steel sector in the Aegean Region to the CBAM, which will come into effect on January 1, 2026, ensuring its competitive structure is maintained.”
Expansion into the Middle East market
Ertan expressed that the upcoming period presents significant opportunities in the Gulf Region, particularly in Kuwait, which is the third country expected to invest the most in infrastructure and superstructure projects after Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. He indicated that in order for our members to maximize the benefits from these opportunities, a Sectoral Trade Delegation to the Kuwaiti market is planned for May.
