Steel innovation for carbon-free future!

Professor Olaf Deutschmann from KIT's Institute of Chemical Technology and Polymer Chemistry (ITCP) has led a research team that has made a revolutionary breakthrough in the steelmaking industry. The newly developed hydrogen technology holds the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of steel companies and is expected to make a valuable impact on the global struggle against climate change.

Prof. Deutschmann is reported to emphasized that this innovative technology could take a long time to catch on with steel companies around the world, highlighting the need for rapid and effective action in the current climate crisis. Researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and  German SMS Group have determined that this new process, based on modernizing blast furnace technology, has the potential to reduce carbon footprint by 2%-4% with moderate investments.

Cost-effective also for conventional plants, this technology offers a promising solution to reduce CO2 emissions in a global context. Improving industrial sustainability through environmentally friendly approaches by modernizing steel production processes is a priority goal of the research team.
