Steel Dynamics demands antidumping duties on US imports

US-based steel producer Steel Dynamics has filed formal applications with the US Department of Commerce and the US International Trade Commission to impose anti-dumping duties on imports of corrosion-resistant flat-rolled steel, arguing that increased imports are harming the domestic market. The company expects these duties to be applied to imports from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, Taiwan, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

Barry Schneider, Chief Operating Officer of Steel Dynamics, said that imports of corrosion-resistant flat-rolled steel, which is used in various market sectors such as the construction industry and the production of automobiles and white goods, from these 10 countries were less than 1.3 million tons in the same period last year, but increased to almost 2 million tons in the first half of this year.

The company also requested countervailing duties against imports of corrosion-resistant flat-rolled steel from Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Vietnam. Steel Dynamics emphasized that the Commerce Department must decide within 20 days whether to initiate the requested investigations, while the International Trade Commission must make a preliminary injury determination within 45 days.

These developments are considered as an important step to ensure competitive balance in the US steel market and to protect domestic producers.
