SSAB has announced its collaboration with Danieli to establish a new fossil-free mini steel mill in Luleå, Sweden. This new facility, with a capacity of 2.5 million tons per year, is reported to produce top-quality steel products using advanced technology, marking a significant step in sustainability.
Danieli’s innovative solutions include the Digimelter enhanced with Q-One technology, the QSP-DUE system, and the latest generation tunnel furnace technology. Under the agreement, Danieli will provide a highly automated technology solution for the new mini steel mill, featuring two electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, casting, and a strip mill.
The plant, with an annual capacity of 2.5 million tons, will comprise two electric arc furnaces, advanced secondary metallurgy, a direct strip rolling mill, and a cold rolling complex offering a wide range of premium products. The facility will be supplied with a mix of fossil-free sponge iron from the Hybrit demo plant in Gällivare and recycled scrap.
These technologies will expand SSAB's product range and accelerate the transition to emission-free steel production. Additionally, this transformation is expected to reduce Sweden's CO2 emissions by 7%.
