SSAB announces it will decarbonize all steel deliveries to Scania

Truck manufacturer Scania and SSAB have signed a letter of intent to decarbonize all steel deliveries from SSAB for Scania's heavy-duty vehicles by 2030.

SSAB announces it will decarbonize all steel deliveries to Scania

SSAB's deliveries of its proprietary "fossil-free steel" are targeted to increase rapidly from smaller quantities from 2026 and will play a key role in the transition to a sustainable transportation system, the steelmaker says.

SSAB is the main supplier of steel for Scania's vehicles. The partners claim that the new agreement, the next step in a long-standing relationship, radically reduces climate emissions. SSAB states that the 100% decarbonized delivery target is one of the most ambitious targets agreed between SSAB and any customer. In addition, the First Movers Coalition, of which Scania and SSAB are members, highlights an ambitious plan to reduce the carbon footprint in hard-to-reduce sectors.

Scania has set an industry-leading strategy to significantly reduce carbon emissions by 2030 in four "hot spots" that account for around 80% of supply chain emissions: batteries, steel, aluminum and cast iron.

Scania states that the supply chain decarbonization strategy and targets initially cover Scania's production in Europe, but will be gradually expanded to include production in China and Latin America.
