SSAB and Stena Metall announced that the collaboration aims to create a strong value chain that utilizes more recycled metals and minimizes carbon dioxide emissions. According to the announcement, the first deliveries are to be made from Halmstad to Oxelösund by train, an environmentally friendly way of transportation.
Asma Manesh, Commodity Manager Scrap at SSAB, emphasized the importance of partnerships in the raw material sector in order to achieve their goal of fossil-free steel production and stated that the agreement with Stena Metall is a significant step for the Swedish recycling market, “Our transformation in Oxelösund means that we will reduce Sweden’s CO2 emissions by around 3 percent by producing steel from both recycled scrap metal and fossil-free sponge iron.”
SSAB announced plans to convert its entire Nordic production system to steel with practically zero fossil carbon emissions. SSAB in Oxelösund reportedly to be the first plant to start this conversion and the new production system is expected to be in operation in late 2026.
