Total production in the third quarter of 2024 reached 1,330,900 tons, a fall of 2.1% compared to 1,359,900 tons in Q3 2023. This follows a sharper decline of 15.2% y-o-y in Q2 2024. The sector faced significant pressure due to the increase in dumped imports, which continued to affect local producers. This highlighted the urgent need for measures to raise demand and protect the domestic steel industry.
The South African Iron and Steel Institute (SAISI) has called for the urgent acceleration of state-led infrastructure projects to raise steel consumption and to provide the necessary support to the sector. SAISI also called on stakeholders to adopt robust trade measures and prioritize local production to protect domestic producers from rising Asian and low-cost steel imports.
