Preliminary data from the US Department of Commerce reveals a substantial drop in US rebar imports for June 2024. The total volume of rebar imports stood at 52,392 metric tons (mt), marking a significant decrease of 53.7% from May and a sharp decline of 72.8% compared to June 2023.
In monetary terms, the value of rebar imports in June was $33.4 million, a steep fall from $72.3 million in May and $123.0 million in the same month last year.
Algeria emerged as the leading exporter of rebar to the US in June, contributing 28,608 mt. Other notable sources included Mexico with 7,799 mt, Canada with 6,263 mt, Oman with 5,849 mt, and the Dominican Republic with 2,002 mt.
This downturn in rebar imports highlights shifting dynamics in the US construction and manufacturing sectors, potentially influenced by changing economic conditions and trade policies.
