Severstal has started construction of a gas chamber furnace for heat treatment of metal at the flat-rolled products production facility of the Cherepovets Steel Plant (CherMK). The new equipment will increase production volumes of thick plate high-strength sheet metal by heat treatment at Mill 2800.
The investment project, worth approximately $4,480,000, aims to expand heat treatment capacity and increase production of high-strength steel grades such as Powerweld and Powerhard, whose production increased by 24% in 2023. Modern heat treatment equipment will reduce natural gas consumption and CO2 emissions.
The project includes the assembly of the metal frame and cladding of the furnace, the installation of power equipment and the installation of a metal loading and unloading device. An automatic pressure and sealing control system will ensure process safety.
The manufacturer of the new furnace is a local company. The general subcontractor is finalising the foundations for the main process equipment. The construction and installation works are scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2024.
