Severstal, one of Russia's major steel companies, has announced ambitious plans to reduce emissions. Following the decommissioning of sintering machines at the Cherepovets Steel Mill (CherMK), it is planned to significantly reduce emissions by 96 thousand tonnes per year.
The first phase of the project began on 8 May with the shutdown of three sintering machines at the plant. This step was approved by environmental authorities, deputies, environmental activists, as well as company employees.
Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of Severstal Russian Steel, emphasised that this step is an important step in the company's strategy to create an environmentally friendly steel production chain. Vinogradov also noted that a new $1 billion iron ore pellet complex is under construction, which will reduce emissions by 30% compared to 2017 levels and reduce greenhouse gases by two million tonnes per year.
The company's plans for 2026 include the closure of seven of the eight sintering machines at CherMK. The remaining unit will be redirected to produce iron flux from metallurgical waste.
