Severstal started upgrading the environmental equipment of Blast Furnace No. 5 at Cherepovets Steel Mill (CherMK). According to Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of Severstal Russian Steel and Resource Assets Division, a new dust collector was installed, which is the most important environmental facility at Blast Furnace No. 5. It will significantly improve the efficiency of cleaning the grate gas and increase the dust capture rate.
The complex construction operation of the 80-metre-high, 1,500-tonne structure was carried out by the Domnaremont Centre, a division of Severstal. The overhaul, which cost more than $423 million, is part of the company's long-term programme to create an green steel production chain. It brings the company closer to its plans to reduce the CO2 intensity of steel production by 10 % by 2030 compared to 2020 levels.
Another important environmental facility at Blast Furnace No. 5 is the aspiration system, which removes dusty air from the pig iron transfer and transport areas. In addition, the overhaul includes modernisation of the natural gas supply system, which, combined with a modern furnace cooling system, will reduce coke consumption and CO2 emissions during pig iron production.
