Sanyo Special Steel announced their European subsidiary and integrated special steel producer Ovako has completed building a carbon-free hydrogen plant in Sweden. The opening ceremony at the Hofors Steel Mill was held on 5th September 5. Among plenty of guests at the plant opening, Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson also joined the delegation.
The plant will be ısing electricity from non-fossil fuel sources like water to produce approximately 4,000 cubic meters of carbon-free hydrogen per hour. The Hofors Steel Plant was operating on fuels containing LPG in its facilities like the annealing furnace. The switching to the green energy (use of hydrogen) CO2 resulting will be reduced by 50% and it is equal to 20,000 tons per year.
In April 2020, Ovako tried heating bloom energy cells using hydrogen technology at the Hofors Steel Mill. Plus, since June 2021, the company is building a hydrogen plant at the same facility in Sweden. Actual implementation of the new heating is complete. In addition the company's steel production has been carbon neutral according to the carbon emissions offset program since early 2022. Selling green steel products has been the aim and it is now the successful outcome of all those efforts. Environmentally friendly methods, which are a rising trend in the world, seem to become widespread.
Being the largest of its kind in Europe, this new carbon-free hydrogen steel plant is a pioneer. In this respect, it has a special title. The Swedish government has already shown a great support by providing financial aid for the construction. Also four major companies that attract attention in the region (Volvo Group, Hitachi ABB Power Grids, H2 Green Steel and Nel Hydrogen) have formed a consortium to participate in the project.
Ovako announced that it plans to establish hydrogen production facilities in each of its steel mills by 2030. It plans to be a pioneer in green steel production and continue to develop this technology in the best way by further increasing measures to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.
