Brazilian iron ore pellet producer Samarco Mineração is steadily progressing towards its goal of achieving full operational capacity. After resuming operations in late 2020 following a devastating tailings dam collapse that occurred five years ago, Samarco has now reached a production milestone of 20 million tons.
Notably, the company has resumed operations without relying on tailings dams, which were responsible for the previous disaster. Samarco has outlined its plans to reach 60 percent capacity by 2025 and expects to invest 1.6 billion reais ($277 million) this year, primarily for the advancement of the Germano quarry and dam characterization project, as well as other innovative initiatives. With an optimistic outlook, the company aims to attain its maximum capacity by 2028, projecting an annual production volume of 30 million tons.
