Salzgitter and the utility Friesen Elektra have signed a long-term purchase agreement for the energy from the "Sande Hybrid Energy Park" being built in the Friesland region of Lower Saxony, Germany. The park is scheduled to be operational at the beginning of 2024.
From May 2024, a permanent green power supply of around 80 MW will be secured from the park for the steelmaker's strip mill Salzgitter Flachstahl. The already existing "Sande Wind Farm" is being expanded to generate energy from wind turbines and photovoltaic systems. In the final phase of construction, the total output of the Sande Hybrid Energy Park is expected to exceed 120MW.
"Green" energy from photovoltaic plants is initially an integral component of Salzgitter Flachstahl's regular energy supply portfolio, the company says. The long-term plan is to utilise this power for the production of green hydrogen. At the same time, the agreement also includes the option to supply locally produced hydrogen.
"The implementation of sustainable steel in combination with energy production is becoming increasingly important not only for us, but also for our suppliers and customers," says Gunnar Groebler, Chief Executive Officer of Salzgitter.
