Salzgitter and VNG sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Salzgitter & VNG signed a Memorandum of Understanding to study hydrogen applied in steelmaking.

Salzgitter and VNG sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

The German Salzgitter Group and VNG, a natural gas company headquartered in Leipzig, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). Both companies will jointly examine options for supplying hydrogen for steel production at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH's plant and the resulting carbon footprint.

The analysis will include electrolyzer options and the supply of non-pipeline hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia or methanol that can be used as an energy source for partial supply in the transition phase.

Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG, said: “Providing hydrogen to steel mills is one of the key elements of our SALCOS® transformation program. I look forward to doing more in collaboration with VNG, after doing some in-depth research on the subject as part of a study we are conducting with our partners from Salzgitter Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter.”

Hans-Joachim Polk, VNG's Executive Board Member for Infrastructure and Technical Affairs, said: “Developing the hydrogen economy is a fundamental prerequisite for reducing carbon emissions in the industry. We are therefore delighted to continue our trusting cooperation with Salzgitter in the context of this joint analysis to map the path to a climate-compatible hydrogen supply to the steel mills at the Salzgitter location.”
