Salzgitter AG provides steel for Siemens Gamesa's wind turbine

German steel producer Salzgitter AG has signed a major agreement with wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa. Under the agreement, around 25,000 tonnes of heavy plate will be supplied for the production of 36 wind turbines for the ‘Thor’ offshore wind farm to be built off the west coast of Denmark.

According to the company, approximately 30,000 tonnes of raw materials will be used for the production of the heavy plates, while some of these plates will be produced at Peiner Träger GmbH (PTG) with low carbon emissions. The remaining steel plates will be supplied by Salzgitter Mannesmann International from low emission sources in Europe. Heavy plates for the GreenerTowers will be produced by Salzgitter AG's subsidiaries Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH (ILG) and Mannesmann Grobblech GmbH (MGB) in line with Siemens Gamesa's sustainability vision. The companies announced investments in new equipment for low-emission steel production.

Siemens Gamesa's new generation of wind turbines, called ‘GreenerTower’, will significantly reduce carbon emissions, producing less than 700 kg CO₂ equivalent emissions per tonne, and is seen as an important step towards green production in the wind energy sector.
The Thor project, Denmark's largest offshore wind farm, will have a total of 72 wind turbines with an electricity generation capacity of over 1,000 MW. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the power plant is expected to supply energy to more than one million households. The heavy plates to be used in the project are planned to be delivered to wind turbine manufacturers Windar (Spain) and Welcon (Denmark) between March and October 2025.

Maximilian Schnippering, Head of Sustainability at Siemens Gamesa, stated: ‘It is a pleasure to see the first GreenerTowers taking shape in the real world - and not just as drawings. The energy transition requires end-to-end value chains working together to avoid CO₂ equivalent emissions. GreenerTowers is an example of this co-operation. If all turbines installed by the company in one year were replaced with GreenerTowers, this would be equivalent to removing more than 466,000 cars from European roads for one year. Such innovations are crucial to achieving our sustainability goals.’
