SAIL President Amarendu Prakash announced on Monday that they expect to receive four shipments with a capacity of 75,000 tonnes each in December.
Coking coal, an important raw material in the steelmaking process, is currently facing shortage and SAIL considers Russian coking coal to be a cost-effective alternative compared to that supplied from Australia.
Australia has traditionally supplied more than half of India's coking coal imports; This corresponds to approximately 70 million metric tons per year. It also imports coking coal from India, Russia and the USA.
SAIL, India's largest state-owned steelmaker, has received a total of eight shipments from Russia since April.
