The Steel Authority of India (SAIL), a state-owned enterprise, has entered into a partnership with global mining leader BHP to tackle carbon emissions from its blast furnace operations. This collaboration will investigate the potential use of hydrogen and biochar in SAIL’s facilities and aims to set up local research and development efforts.
Highlighting the urgency of aligning the steel industry with climate goals, SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash stated that this alignment is crucial. As the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally, India has pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Currently, the steel industry is responsible for 10% to 12% of India's total emissions, generating 2.54 tons of carbon dioxide for each ton of steel produced. This figure is notably higher than the global average of 1.91 tons.
