The first high-level meeting between the US and China since Russia's invasion of Ukraine is expected to take place earlier this week.
The USA National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will meet with Yang Jiechi, a senior Chinese Communist Party official, in Rome on Monday, Bloomberg cites sources familiar with the matter.
Sullivan, a senior adviser to US President Joe Biden, has been working on increasing the pressure on China to impose sanctions on the Russian economy, as the US and EU allies have done. According to US officials, Beijing has so far made no attempt in this direction.
Among the topics of the meeting, which will take place on Monday, the sources reported that Russia's invasion of Ukraine has implications for regional and global security, and that the Biden administration is working on keeping communication channels open between the world's two largest economies.
Sullivan will also reportedly meet with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Monday to coordinate the international response to the war.
