The Russian delegation to Riyadh, led by Russian Vice President Yuri Ushakov and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, includes Kirill Dmitriyev, President of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). On the US side are Minister of Foreign Affairs Marco Rubio, White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.
High-level security measures were taken in Riyadh ahead of the meetings. A large number of security teams have been deployed at the facility where the meetings will be held, while the meetings are closely followed by the international press.
Ukraine Crisis on the Table in Talks
One of the most important issues to be discussed at the summit in Riyadh will be the Ukraine crisis. It was reported that the US delegation will meet with the Ukrainian delegation tomorrow after talks with Russian officials.
Speaking to reporters in Riyadh, RDIF Chairman Kirill Dmitriev stressed that the Russia-US talks are extremely important for resolving global issues. Dmitriev said that they expect Russia’s position to be heard clearly and hope that the talks will be positive.
Economic Cooperation and Invesments on the Agenda
Dmitriyev said he was part of the Russian delegation as the representative in charge of economic issues, adding that US companies that withdrew from Russia suffered more than $300 billion in losses. “That is why economic cooperation is important for both countries,” Dmitriyev said, adding that both sides should re-evaluate trade relations.
Russian Vice President Yuri Ushakov said ahead of the talks that the main issue was to agree on how to start negotiations with Ukraine. He stressed that the Russian delegation aims to achieve a genuine normalization of relations between Moscow and Washington.
