Russia has approved a $25 billion high-speed railway project

The Russian Government has approved a $25 billion high-speed railway project between Moscow and St. Petersburg, set to begin construction with a need for 1 million tonnes of rebar and other metal products.

Russia has approved a $25 billion high-speed railway project

In June, the Russian Government approved an order to build the country's first high-speed railway (HSR) between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The total cost of construction of the trunk line will be more than 2.2 trillion roubles, which is equivalent to approximately USD 25 billion.

According to Alexander Misharin, vice-president of Sinara Group, the length of the main line will be 780 kilometres, and it is planned to be put into operation by 2030. Misharin also said that one million tonnes of rebar will be required for the construction of the HSL.

In the future it is planned to extend the high-speed railway to Kazan and further to the Urals. In addition, the production of 17 high-speed trains per year will also require metal. It is estimated that 44 high-speed electric trains will be required to operate on the high-speed railway.
The high-speed trains will be built in Russia by Sinara Group at the Ural Locomotives plant in co-operation with Transmashholding.
