The coking division of Kazakhstan’s Qarmet holding (which includes the former Karaganda Metallurgical Plant) has reached record production levels.
According to the company, while the coking shop was producing 4.6 thousand tonnes of product per day at the beginning of 2024, current coke production has increased to 6.8 thousand tonnes per day. This represents a 48% growth.
However, the company believes that the achieved results are still insufficient to meet the 2025 production target, which envisions 3.7 million tonnes of steel output. To reach this goal, an additional 300–500 tonnes of coke need to be produced daily.
To meet the needs of the blast furnace shop, Qarmet is constructing two new coke oven batteries with a combined annual capacity of 1.5 million tonnes. This will allow the company to fully supply its production with in-house raw materials.
