Poland reduced steel production in February

In February 2022, Poland's steel mills reduced steel production by 9.4% m-o-m to 435 thousand tons.

Poland reduced steel production in February

Polish steel production decreased by 34.4% y-o-y in February 2023.

Polish steelmakers smelted 915,000 tons of steel in January-February 2023, 34.5% less than in the same period in 2022.

Poland reduced its steel production in 2022 by 8.6% compared to 2021 to 7.73 million tons. Thus, the country ranked 22nd in the global ranking of world steel producers.

Overall, steel production in the European Union countries in February 2023 decreased by 12.6% compared to February last year to 10.5 million tons. In January-February 2023, 20.7 million tons of steel were produced in the EU, 14.3% less y-o-y.

In the second half of 2022, European steelmakers drastically reduced production capacity due to increasing electricity tariffs and unfavorable market conditions.

EU steelmakers have started restarting halted capacities as the apparent demand for steel and product prices has started to increase and the costs of energy resources have decreased. In addition, the industry anticipates further increases in demand for steel products.

In January 2023, ArcelorMittal Poland restarted blast furnace №3 at its plant in Dombrova-Gurnych, which had been idled since September 2022. The reasons for this were the slowdown of economic activity in Europe, reduced demand on the EU market and increased imports from outside the European Union, as well as the increase in energy prices.
