The project is being implemented in the Pipe Rolling Workshop No. 1, which is used in the hot rolling line at the calibration plant. The workshop uses 60 prefabricated rolls per year. These rolls are used to roll the pipes and deform them under pressure to obtain a precise outer diameter.
In an initiative initiated by the company's employees, the idle used rolls are now used in the production of new parts. Workshop workers use these old rolls to produce parts for barrels that come into direct contact with and shape the pipe metal. This practice has significantly reduced departmental costs by making it unnecessary to purchase equipment from third-party suppliers.
Vladimir Toporov, General Director of PNTZ, said: "This unique development provides an opportunity to increase the reliability of the workshop thanks to the uninterrupted operation of the mill. The contribution of Novotrubny employees to the continuous improvement of the enterprise enables metallurgists to share technical, organizational and managerial ideas and actively implement them. By encouraging these efforts, the company has achieved tangible business benefits and believes that continuous improvement is key to the company's success."
Pipe Rolling Shop No. 1 produces more than 1,500 pipe sizes from 142 steel grades for various industries and is continuously improving its production processes. For example, in 2023, work to change the shape of the mandrel of the TPU 220 automatic mill improved mandrel durability and pipe quality. In addition, the production chain was improved by changing the calibration of the rolls of the TPU 140 automatic mill, and analogs were selected that halved the cost of high-speed cutting tools.
