North Carolina-based Nucor Corp. will lay the foundation for a $290 million expansion of its steel sheet plant in Crawfordsville on Friday. The company says the expansion will create 80 full-time jobs in addition to increased production capacity.
Expansion plans were first detailed in February 2022. Nucor plans to add a construction-grade galvanizing line with an annual steel capacity of 300,000 tons, as well as an annual pre-painting line with a capacity of 250,000 tons.
The Crawfordsville plant produces flat-rolled steel for automotive, appliance, construction, and other industrial and consumer applications.
When the project was first announced, Nucor Executive Vice President of Plate and Pipe Products Rex Query said the expansion would increase the company's profitability in the Midwest and expand its pre-painting footprint.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb attended the groundbreaking ceremony with local officials and Nucor executives.
