NLMK La Louvière in Belgium has started the pre-assembly of three new finishing plant stands for its hot strip rolling mill upgrade, which will enable the company to expand thinner, stronger and more environmentally friendly steel production for its customers in the EU. Pre-assembly is scheduled to last until November 2020, after which the dismantling of the old finishing plant stands will begin, followed by the assembly of new ones, which have already been assembled and tested. The finishing mill stands are provided by Primetals Technologies. In 2019, Primetals Technologies received the tender to modernize the hot strip roll. Extensive upgrade and modernization includes the installation of an automation system, three new and three raised roller mill stands, new drives and motors, as well as a new outlet table, modernized cooling and water systems. The project will allow the factory to expand the production of high-strength fine hot-rolled coils, expand its high-strength product range, and offer customers best-in-class surface tolerances.
The investment in the modernization of the hot strip factory will amount to 150 million euros.
The first phase of the mill transformation is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2020; the second phase will be completed in 2021.
