Nippon Steel reduced carbon dioxide emissions

Japan's steelmaker Nippon Steel Corporation reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 33% by successfully feeding heated hydrogen into a blast furnace during a one-month trial period.

Super COURSE50 technology plans to increase the use of hydrogen instead of coking coal in blast furnaces. It is reported that the technology in question will be an important step in sustainable steel production and a greener future.

Nippon Steel aims to be carbon neutral by 2050 through three innovative technologies: the use of hydrogen reduction technology in blast furnaces, the production of high-quality steel in large electric arc furnaces, and the use of hydrogen in the direct iron reduction process.

As part of this goal, Nippon has added the use of Super COURSE50 technology at the Kimitsu facility in 2026 to its projects.
