Morocco officially ended its safeguard measures on cold rolled and coated flat steel products as of 31 December 2024. This decision, taken under World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, reflects a significant change in Morocco's import regulations.
The safeguard measures were initially introduced to protect domestic steel producers. However, these measures have been in place for ten years and have been extended by extensions. On 9 January, the Moroccan government announced that the products targeted by the safeguard measures are cold rolled and coated steel sheets, imported under specific customs codes.
This development marks a period that will reshape the balance between foreign trade and domestic production in Morocco's steel sector. The lifting of these measures, which have restricted imports throughout the process, may lead to the emergence of new trade opportunities and competitive dynamics.
