MOPCO announced that they have chosen thyssenkrupp Uhde to adapt the advanced technology at their three urea and ammonia plants located in Damietta, Egypt. By utilizing thyssenkrupp Uhde’s innovative carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology, MOPCO aims to capture 145,000 tons of CO2 per year from flue gas of their current ammonia production, which will be used in urea production. At the same time, by installing thyssenkrupp Uhde’s state-of-the-art ammonia converters to its existing three converters, MOPCO intends to increase ammonia production capacity while reducing natural gas consumption in the synthesis loop by approximately 10%.
MOPCO plans to produce around 150,000 tons of green ammonia per year, with plans to provide additional green hydrogen feedstock from new renewable energy-powered water electrolysis units, with the aim of further reducing CO2 emissions.
Ahmed Mahmoud El-Sayed, Chairman and CEO of MOPCO: “This collaboration with thyssenkrupp Uhde represents a significant step towards our sustainability strategic goals. The world-leading technologies will not only increase our production capacity but also demonstrate our commitment to providing more climate-friendly urea and producing green ammonia, making MOPCO one of the leaders in manufacturing such products in the MENA region.”
Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde: “We are proud to support our long-time partner MOPCO in expanding its operations towards greener production with our innovative carbon capture and low-emission ammonia solutions.”
The ammonia and urea plants were built by thyssenkrupp Uhde between 2006 and 2015. Now, in order to increase ammonia production capacity, thyssenkrupp Uhde aims to provide comprehensive services, including the installation of three new ammonia converter cartridges and the integration of the planned green hydrogen supply, during the installation and commissioning phases.
