In the first half of the year, Malaysia's automobile industry experienced notable growth, with production and sales reaching approximately 392,000 and 390,000 units, respectively. This marks an 8% increase in production and a 7% increase in sales compared to the same period last year, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
The MAA has expressed optimism about the market's future, forecasting that domestic vehicle sales will rise to 765,000 units in 2024, up from 740,000 units. Although this represents a 4% decline compared to the nearly 800,000 units sold in 2023, the decline is less serious than previously expected.
Several factors contribute to the relatively stable outlook, including the country's resilient economy, stable interest rates, and a strong backlog of orders. Domestic automakers such as Proton and Perodua have seen particularly strong demand for A-segment passenger cars.
