In a statement on the official social media account of the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs, affiliated with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, it was announced that the amount of cargo handled in Turkish ports during the January-May period of 2024 increased by 4.6% compared to the 215.63 million tons handled in 2023, reaching 225.46 million tons.
It was stated that while the number of containers processed in the ports was 4.99 million TEU last year, this year the number of processed containers reached 5.64 million TEU, showing a 13% increase.
The announcement included cargo handling and container processing statistics conveyed in infographic form. The data indicated that the general cargo quantity processed in the ports in the January-May period of 2024 increased by 8.8% compared to the previous year, especially noting a 35.4% increase in the quantity of transit containers processed in May at the ports. Solid bulk cargoes observed a 2% increase, while liquid bulk cargoes saw a 1.3% decrease. There was a 3.8% increase in vehicle-carried cargoes.
