Liberty Galati is installing a plate cooling unit

The Romanian steelmaker said the new technology will enable the company to address the most profitable market segments, improve divisional efficiency, expand its value-added product portfolio and enhance the quality of finished products for the offshore, shipbuilding, construction and pressure vessel markets.

This will strengthen its commitment to its customers in Romania, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Americas, the company added.

The technology, a MULPIC (Multipurpose Intermittent Cooling) system and water treatment plant, will be supplied by Primetals.

"The integrated cooling system is essential for modern plate mills to produce higher strength and value-added grades that require higher cooling rates and better cooling precision, as in Galati," Sandip Biswas, CEO of Liberty Primary Steel & Mining, said in a note. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
