Landslide disasters in history

The landslide in Erzincan brought to mind the landslides engraved in history.

A landslide occurred at Çöpler mine site in Erzincan's İliç district, where Anagold Madencilik Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. has been producing gold since December 2010. Approximately 10 million cubic meters of soil spread over an area of 800 meters at a speed of 10 meters per second. Nine workers who were on the site at the time of the landslide were buried under the soil. Search and rescue teams continue their work. The number of detained, including the site supervisor, increased to 7.

Brumadinho dam collapse

This disaster in Erzincan brought to mind mining incidents over the years. On January 25, 2019, an iron ore tailings dam near Brumadinho, Brazil, owned by mining company Vale SA, collapsed, spilling nearly 12 million cubic meters of tailings into the environment in less than five minutes, causing a disaster that killed at least 270 people.

Hpakant jade mine disaster

In 2020, more than 170 people - most of whom were migrants - died in one of the worst disasters in Hpakant after mining waste collapsed into a lake.

Siirt copper mine collapse

On November 17, 2016, a collapse occurred in the copper mine operated by Park Elektrik Üretim Madencilik A.Ş., a subsidiary of Ciner Group's Park Holding, in Madenköy in Siirt's Şirvan district, and 16 people were trapped under the collapse.

Mariana dam collapse

In 2015, a landslide in Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil, caused by the collapse of a tailings dam at a mine operated by Vale SA and Australia's BHP Billiton, killed 19 people, forced hundreds to flee their homes and devastated two villages. A federal judge in Brazil ordered BHP, Vale, and Samarco mining companies to pay a total of 47.6 billion reais ($9.67 billion) in compensation for the deadly 2015 dam burst.

Taoshi tailings dam failure

In 2008, nearly 200 people were killed when a retaining wall collapsed due to a landslide at the tailings dam of an iron ore mine illegally operated by Tashan Mining Co. in Xiangfen county of Shanxi province in China. The landslide pulled down the tailings impoundment of the Tashan iron ore mine, causing an avalanche three stories high and 600 meters wide, consisting of tons of rubble, stones, and mud.
