Karabük Iron and Steel Factories (KARDEMİR) is starting production at a facility that will manufacture rolling mill rolls, axles, forging shafts and tool steel in various diameters, especially for forging railway axles.
The $5 million forged steel investment made by KARDEMİR's subsidiary Döküm Makina Sanayi ve Ticaret AŞ (KARDÖKMAK) was commissioned with a ceremony.
Following the arrival of all equipment to the plant in March, mechanical installation, mechanical and hot tests were completed and the test processes were finalised.
In the facility, which is planned to manufacture 20 thousand tonnes of forged steel annually, rolling mill rolls of various diameters, axles, forging shafts and tool steel will be manufactured, primarily forging railway axles.
The facility, which will meet the needs of important institutions in Turkey with domestic and national mass production, will serve important sectors such as defence industry, transportation and energy in the industrial ecosystem.
Following the investment that will serve the defence industry and many other fields, especially the railway sector, the production process has started.
"We will serve transportation, energy, aviation and defence"
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir, Chairman of the Board of Directors of KARDEMİR, said that the 2500 tonne press will take the first step as a service that forges wheels and axles for railways.
Stating that the press should produce works that can work 24 hours a day without stopping, Demir said, "If the industrial ecosystem of a country, especially the elements that make up the heavy industry, have not developed domestic capabilities and have not implemented their qualified products, it would not be very easy to talk about a national industrial move of the country as a whole. We are taking one of the steps in this direction today within KARDÖKMAK."
Stating that providing added value to Turkey is at the forefront of everything, Demir continued his words as follows:
"Providing added value is also possible by doing value-added works, quality people, quality installations and labour. We sincerely believe that KARDEMİR and KARDÖKMAK will carry out very important and valuable works in the coming months and years. We want to follow a path from ore to jewellery because jewellery means value. Our profiled iron, high-alloy steel and confirmation alloys are all jewels, and let us see this as a step on our journey towards much more qualified products in the future. We will hopefully implement a series of products and services that will serve various sectors, transportation, energy, aviation and defence under this roof. I would like to thank everyone who contributed."
