KARDEMİR aims to become a worldwide company with 3.5 million tonnes of steel production

Utkanlar, whose views are included in the 2022 Sustainability Report published by the company, reminded that 2022 started with the exit from a global pandemic affecting the whole world.

Market fluctuations limited forecasts

Utkanlar underlined that the Russia-Ukraine war had consequences that affected the sector and said, "In addition to its devastating humanitarian dimensions, this geopolitical development had significant consequences that also affected our sector, from rising energy prices to supply chain challenges. Markets have fluctuated throughout the year, and the forecasting space has shortened significantly. Our strategic stance to manage our business with a responsible and sustainability-oriented approach, our competencies and our ability to successfully manage the adversities presented by the external environment enabled us to complete 2022 with a successful performance."

"We aim to become a global company"

"In the second century of our Republic, we aim to become a global company at the forefront of Turkiye's industrial enterprises with a steel production target of 3.5 million tonnes with high added value and rich product content," said Necdet Utkanlar and added: "In 2022, KARDEMİR broke an annual production record in its blast furnace No. 5 and produced 2.22 million tonnes of crude steel and 2.14 million tonnes of finished products. As a result of the studies we implemented during this period, 8 different steel grades and 74 new products were offered to the service of high value-added sectors such as automotive, railway, defence and machinery manufacturing. These works, which contribute to the reduction of imports of high value-added products and thus the foreign trade deficit, and to the foreign trade balance of our economy by keeping national capital in the country, are the common and great pride of our team."

Utkanlar stated that the 1st and 2nd stage environmental investments completed between 2006-2019 reached 150 million dollars, and the 3rd stage environmental investment, which is planned to be completed in 2024, will cost 50 million dollars.

Total R&D expenditure of 17.9 million liras

Sharing the information that KARDEMİR spent a total of 17.9 million TL R&D expenditure in the 2019-2022 period, of which 6.6 million TL will be spent in 2022, Utkanlar said, "We anticipate that our R&D activities and therefore our investments will increase as required by the new technologies we aim to commission in the coming period. On the other hand, we attach importance to joint R&D studies, we continue to come together with the private sector and sectoral associations as well as university collaborations in order to participate in national and international calls and to research the technologies of the future with the academic world."

"KARDEMİR recycled 23.1 million tonnes of raw materials in 2022"

Utkanlar emphasised that in 2022, KARDEMİR recycled 23.1 million tonnes of raw materials from reusable wastes generated in various processes of its operations and brought them into the economy and continued as follows:

"In order to maintain our leading position in our sector and become a global company, our constant goal is to maintain our business environment where qualified personnel are proud to work, where satisfaction and loyalty are at the highest level with the social, cultural, development and creativity opportunities offered.

Another goal in this direction is to prioritise human resources within the corporate culture, to support them with training, development and career opportunities according to their current and potential performance, and to continuously improve productivity. In 2022, a total of 153,44 thousand 44 hours of training was organised in 347 different subjects, including professional and technical, managerial and personal development, and the training hours per person was 35.58.

"We will continue to work and produce by maintaining our hope"

We are working hard to fulfil our commitments to our stakeholders in our journey to become a global brand and a manufacturer with global ambitions. In 87 years, we are determined to be a good corporate citizen and to fully fulfil our ever-increasing responsibilities in order to crown the unique experience we have built with new experiences and bequeath it to future generations. Our company will develop its activities in line with its strategic goals and support global progress and the fight against the climate crisis, in addition to its contribution to Turkiye's development. We will continue to work and produce with hope, recognising that challenges trigger opportunities and turbulence triggers innovation."
