Japanese company JFE Steel has shut down the last blast furnace operating at its Keihin iron and steel plant near Tokyo. The move away from blast furnace production is part of the company's overall project to decarbonise its production.
The company closed two blast furnaces in 2020.
In September 2022, JFE Steel President Yoshihisa Kitano announced that the company will spend approximately 1 trillion on the implementation of green metallurgy technologies. Yen ($6.8 billion) by 2030. During this period, carbon dioxide emissions at the company's operations must be reduced by 30%.
