Japan's steel exports down 5.5% in the first half of the year

The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF) reported that Japan exported nearly 2.6 million tons of steel products in June, marking a decrease of 6.5% from the previous month and 8.5% from the same month last year. This decline reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the Japanese steel industry, including global economic uncertainties and fluctuating demand in key markets.

In the first half of this year, Japan’s steel exports totaled around 16 million tons, representing a 5.5% decline compared to the same period last year. South Korea remained the largest importer of Japanese steel, receiving 2.45 million tons. This volume, however, marked a significant 20% drop from the previous year, indicating a contraction in South Korean demand.

Thailand followed as the second-largest importer, purchasing 2.08 million tons of steel from Japan. This figure was also down by 13.7% year-on-year, highlighting reduced demand in another key Southeast Asian market.

The decrease in exports to South Korea and Thailand suggests a need for Japanese steel producers to explore new markets and adapt their strategies to the changing global landscape. Despite these challenges, Japan continues to play a crucial role in the global steel market, leveraging its advanced manufacturing capabilities and technological innovations.
