According to data from the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF), Japan exported around 21.3 million tons of steel products in the January-August 2024 period. This represents a decline of 4.2% compared to the same period last year.
South Korea remains Japan’s top export destination with around 3.22 million tons but saw an 18.8% y-o-y decline. Thailand came in second with around 2.83 million tons, while exports to China totaled 1.85 million tons, Taiwan 1.22 million tons, and the US around 805,000 tons.
In August 2024, Japan's steel exports amounted to about 2.65 million tons. This represents a decrease of 8.4% compared to July and 5.1% compared to the same month last year.
