Established at Yokohama National University in Kanagawa, southeast of Tokyo, the Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center will bring together experts and academics from government and private institutions.
The center, which is a first in Japan, will aim to estimate the damage that typhoons can cause and to determine the framework of the measures that can be taken.
ENERGY WILL BE PRODUCED
The center will also lead research on the exploitation of typhoons as a renewable energy source, in line with the Japanese government's goal of "zero carbon by 2050".
Head of the Center, Meteorology Prof. Fudeyasu Hironori said he "feels defeated by the great damage done by typhoons."
Fudeyasu said, "We aim to collaborate with many researchers to conduct rigorous studies and present results to the community. I can see the light ahead." said.
