Japan Minister of Industry Yoji Muto stated in his call to the United States that Japan requested to be exempt from these tariffs.
Minister Muto referred to the tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, which would apply without exception to all countries, and mentioned that they are closely monitoring the potential impacts on Japanese companies and will take necessary precautions.
On Monday, Trump announced that the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports would be raised to 25% without any exemptions. Trump stated that this decision aims to support industries within the U.S., but was warned that it could increase tensions in global trade.
However, Trump expressed that he would "carefully consider" Australia's request to be exempt from steel tariffs, signaling that exemptions for specific countries might be considered.
