To decrease thermal coal import costs against inflation and secure energy supply, Japanese energy utilities are trying to increase lower-quality import sources. The aim involves the adoption of cheaper low- to medium-grade coal and the search for new sources of supply from Africa and South America.
The disruption of Russia's energy exports has led to a global supply disruption, which has caused the prices of coal and liquefied natural gas to increase to record levels.
In 2022, 73% of Japan's thermal coal purchases were made up of Australia and 7% of Russia.
