In 2022, the Italian steel industry increased its revenues from the export of steel products by 23.9% compared to the previous year to 27.2 billion euros. Naturally, exports amounted to 15.7 million tonnes.
The cost of importing steel products into Italy increased by 33% y-o-y last year to 26.9 billion euros. Naturally, steel supplies to the country amounted to 20.3 million tonnes.
Thus, last year, the total turnover of the steel sector in Italy increased by 15.8% compared to 2021 to 66 billion euros.
In 2022, Italy produced 21.6 million tonnes of steel, 11.6% less than the previous year. Last year, the production of rolled products decreased by 12% y-o-y, in particular wire rod production decreased by 11.6% y-o-y to 5.2 million tonnes and plate production by 11.3% y-o-y to 3.5 million tonnes. Rebar production was 2.6 million tonnes (-12.5% y/y) and steel profile production was 752 thousand tonnes (-16.1% y/y).
In 2022, steel sheet production decreased by 13.8% y-o-y to 9.6 million tonnes, hot rolled coil production by 17.3% y-o-y to 7.2 million tonnes, and cold rolled coil production by 9% y-o-y to 5 million tonnes. Galvanised rolled steel production was 3.7 million tonnes, down 11.4% y-o-y.
