The country's automobile production was realized at the lowest temperature in the last 68 years with 283 thousand 9 units, while commercial vehicle production decreased by 17 percent to 192 thousand. This sharp decline in Italy's automotive sector, the third largest economy in the European Union, has drawn attention.
With the merger of Fiat Chrysler and French PSA-Peugeot in 2021, Stellantis' vehicle production in Italy also took a serious blow. While the company's production was 751,384 units in 2023, this figure decreased by about 37 percent to 475,90 in 2024.
Stellantis, the world's fourth largest carmaker, is struggling with low demand for electric vehicles in Europe, regulatory performance and competition from Chinese cars.
FIM-CISL President Ferdinando Uliano has called on the European Union to review its 2025 emissions targets. “This is not only Italy's struggle, but also Europe's,” Uliano said. In the union's statement, 2024 was described as “a black year for Stellantis”.
1 Million Production Target
Although Stellantis manufactures brands such as Fiat, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lancia at five different plants in Italy, the production halt has not yet been officially announced.
However, Stellantis presented a plan to increase production in Italy last month. The company announced plans to invest a total of 2 billion euros and produce new models in Italy in 2025. New model launches are expected to lead to an increase in production in 2026.
In this process, the Italian government is also under pressure. The government aims to increase automobile production to over 1 million vehicles. It is hoped that Stellantis' steps to increase production efficiency will revitalize the Italian automotive industry.
