Italian Beltrame restarts its plant in Romania

Italian conglomerate Beltrame will restart steel production at its Donalam plant, the only one in Romania with an electric arc furnace.

Italian Beltrame restarts its plant in Romania

The Italians bought the plant in February 2022 under the name COS Targoviste. In June of the same year, they reactivated the rebar production lines, hoping to reach a future production capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year. This production volume is expected to be able to meet the Romanian demand for rebar.

For the production of the products, the company had to use semi-finished products produced by other companies in the group. Due to external factors, such as high electricity prices, it was difficult to start production. Unlike some other EU countries, the Romanian government does not subsidise electricity payments for industrial companies.

Beltrame plans to invest around EUR 100 million over the next five years to modernise the plant's equipment and decarbonise its production. These investments include plans to build new workshops for the production of rebar and wire rod with a capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year.
