Iron and steel sector achieved USD 28 billion in 2024

The iron and steel sector completed last year with a strong export performance, reaching a total export figure of USD 28 billion.

The iron and steel sector accounted for 12.6% of Türkiye's overall exports. The Mediterranean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association (ADMIB) kept its share in the country's exports at 1.2% with an export volume of USD 3.2 billion.

Türkiye's total exports increased by 2.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching USD 261.9 billion. On a sectoral basis, exports of ferrous and non-ferrous metals decreased by 0.2% to USD 12 billion, while steel exports increased by 8.7% to USD 16 billion.

ADMIB showed a strong performance

When ADMIB's export data for 2024 are analysed, a 1.4% decrease was recorded in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and exports were recorded at the level of USD 759 million. However, steel exports made a big leap and reached USD 2.4 billion with an increase of 57.1%. With a total of USD 3.2 billion worth of exports, the Union had a 1.2% share in the country's total exports.

In December, exports of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in Türkiye increased by 2.7% to USD 975 million, while steel exports increased by 7.3% to USD 1.4 billion. In this period, ADMIB exports of ferrous and non-ferrous metals increased by 9.2% to USD 73 million and steel exports grew by 21.13% to USD 242 million.

The biggest market is Germany

Throughout 2024, Germany was the country with the highest sales in iron and steel exports, followed by Italy, Romania, Iraq and the USA. Italy ranked first in ADMIB's exports. Egypt, Iraq, Romania and Algeria were among the most important export destinations of the association.

ADMIB President Fuat Tosyalı: Our sector has proven its durability

Fuat Tosyalı, President of ADMIB, stated that despite the difficulties encountered in global trade in 2024, the Turkish iron and steel industry displayed a successful performance. Stating that they continue to develop strategies that support the growth of the sector, Tosyalı stated that they aim to increase competitiveness by focusing on green production and efficiency in 2025 and said, ‘We will try to maintain our competitiveness by focusing on high value-added products. Our strategy is based on innovation, sustainability and market diversification. We will continue to encourage our members to develop environmentally friendly projects and adopt technologies that increase energy efficiency.’

‘We want to increase Türkiye's share in global trade’

Stating that the success in the European market was achieved as a result of intensive efforts, Tosyalı emphasised that the European Union will continue to be the largest trade partner for Türkiye. Stating that they are evaluating opportunities that will create a competitive advantage in the USA and aiming to grow in the African market, Tosyalı said, ‘As ADMIB, we will continue our efforts to support the development of our industry and contribute to Türkiye's strong position in the global market in 2025. Our aim is to make the highest contribution to our country's economy by having a successful year on both ton and value basis.’
