While the iron and steel sectors supported Turkey's exports by 2.3 billion dollars in June, the sectors, which exported 13.6 billion dollars in the first 6 months of the year, made a significant contribution to the country's economy by undertaking 12.7 percent of Turkey's total exports despite the stagnation in global demand.
According to the statement made by the Mediterranean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association (ADMIB), Turkey's exports in June decreased by 10.5 percent to 20.9 billion dollars, and in the first 6 months of the year, it amounted to 123 billion 377 million dollars with a 1.8 percent decrease.
The 9-day holiday was effective in the decrease in June. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals and steel sectors were negatively affected by the holiday period and showed a decrease.
While the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector exported 1 billion dollars with a decrease of 18.8 percent in June, the steel sector exported 1.3 billion dollars with a decrease of 42.1 percent. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals exports accounted for 6.1 per cent of Turkey's total exports, while steel had a share of 7.3 per cent.
The two sectors, despite the decreases, increased their share and accounted for 13.4 per cent of Turkey's exports in June.
ADMIB also showed similar decreases in June. The ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector exported 64 million dollars with a decrease of 15.5 percent compared to the same period last year. In this month, steel exports decreased by 46.4 per cent to 143 million dollars.
13.6 billion dollar contribution in 6 months
According to the total export figures for January-June, Turkey-wide ferrous and non-ferrous metals exports decreased by 16.8 percent to 6.5 billion dollars, while exports from the steel sector decreased by 39.2 percent to 7.1 billion dollars.
According to the export figures made by ADMIB General Secretariat in the first 6 months of the year, exports from the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector decreased by 14.5 per cent to 399 million dollars and exports from the steel sector decreased by 55.1 per cent to 675 million dollars.
In the first half of the year, the iron and non-ferrous metals sector had a 6 per cent share of Turkey's exports, while the steel sector had a 6.7 per cent share.
In June, the first country in Turkey's iron and steel exports was Germany with 213.4 million dollars.
This country was followed by Italy with 133.2 million dollars and Romania with 117.5 million dollars. In ADMIB's exports, Romania ranked first with 28.5 million dollars. This country was followed by Iraq with 14.4 million dollars and Germany with 13.2 million dollars.
According to the information given, in the first half of the year, the first country in Turkey's iron and steel exports was Germany with 1.3 billion dollars, followed by Italy with 779.1 million dollars and Israel with 624.4 dollars. In the January-June period exports of ADMIB, Germany took the first place with 80.2 million dollars. This country was followed by Iraq with 79 million dollars and Romania with 73.8 million dollars.
The mobility in demand will also be reflected in the figures
ADMIB President Fuat Tosyalı, whose views were included in the statement, noted that the negative impact of the decrease caused by the contraction in global demand, especially in the iron and steel sector, continued and stated that they could not reflect the performance they wanted in June with the effect of the 9-day holiday.
Tosyalı made the following statements in his statement:
"As a result of these developments, our steel sector in Turkey experienced a 42.1 per cent decrease and our ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector experienced an 18.8 per cent decrease in June. However, we will not feel the negative impact of the holiday we experienced in June in July. I think that we will achieve a better result when we add factors such as decreasing energy costs and the start of mobilisation in demand."
Stating that in addition to the strengthening of recovery signals in the US economy, a revival in tourism is expected in the ASEAN region, Tosyalı said that construction projects are expected to increase in the medium term and demand is expected to revive accordingly.
Tosyalı said, "We believe that the second half of the year will be better. With the revival in demand, we will try to reach and even exceed 30 billion dollars of exports at the end of the year in the iron and steel sector in Turkey. Our goal is to contribute to our country with an export worthy of the 100th year of our Republic despite all kinds of difficulties we are experiencing."
